"Brewer: Stéphane Quellet. | No need to look very far: there is always a Feldschlösschen close to you, no matter where you stay in Switzerland. Yes, this is it: the biggest brewery in the country which controls 33% of the beer market (+/- 3% as the real production is undisclosed) and the giant every beer geek loves to hate. Everything started when brewers Theophil Roniger and Mathias Wüthrich launched ""zum Feldschlösschen"" in Rheinfelden back in 1876. Twenty years later it became number 1 in the country with a production of more than 100'000 hectoliters. During the seventies Feldschlösschen shifted into turbo mode: 1970, takeover of Gurten (closed in 1997); 1972, takeover of the Valaisanne (which remains nowadays the only external production site of the group besides the main plant in Rheinfelden); 1974, the production raised above 1 million hectoliters. A bit later, 1989: takeover of Warteck (closed in 1991); 1991: takeover of Cardinal (which was closed at the second attempt in 2011). 1996 saw the fusion of Feldschlösschen and Hürlimann (Zurich) and an almost immediate closure of the plant in Zurich one year later. In 2000, still facing an erosion of their sales (due mainly to a decline of the beer consumption per capita since 1991 as well to a constant increase of the import) the Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann holding decided to abandon the beverages to concentrate on real estate business. And so came the Danish giant Carlsberg ... More than 20 years after, the company is still facing tons of problems and is still losing on (at least) 3 points: 1) they are unable to compete with the very low prices of many import beers 2) they are unable to satisfy the ""drink local"" need of many consumers (the closures of almost all of their take-overs came at the worst moment and there is no turning back) 3) they are unable to satisfy the need of craft beers from an ever-growing part of the population, despite numerous attempts (some of them being close to marketing lies). So my personal prediction still is that Carlsberg will drop out of the Swiss market in the medium-term. Brewing on several 400 hl installations with a maximum daily production of 8'800 hectoliters... The production given on the left is an estimation; the real numbers remain undisclosed. Additionally, a huge amount of non-alcoholic beers (500'000 to 800'000 hl?) are exported to muslim countries."

"Brewer: Simon Neuhold. | It was in 1897 that Hans Müller bought the brewery Johann Weber, started 11 years before. This family-owned enterprise is nowadays run by the 4th generation and has 50 employees. Besides beer production, Müller is also trading beers from other breweries as well as wine and non-alcoholic beverages. Beside mostly german traditional styles, this brewery offers a Pale Ale, a Red Porter and a Dry Stout. All of them being fairly decent. The production is undisclosed (which is rarely a sign of growth) and the number on the left is from 2013. The production has been outsourced to Falken in 2021 and the brewery built a brewpub on the same place with a 12 hl installation in November 2022. The beers brewed there are marketed under the name ""Müller Bräu Handcrafted"". In fact not registered at the Federal Customs as the taxation is handled by Falken."
