Brewer: Christian Schenkl.
Opened on august 26th 2006. A brewer with lot of ambitions considering the brewing capacities and enjoying a lot of success at fast speed. Brewing also Goldküstenbräu, Oberlanderbräu and Lozaernerbier under contract (same beers as Kellerfrisch and Amber), as well as Fischerstube Ueli Winterbogg. Good beers.
25% of the production is for contract brewers.

Uninspired middle-sized brewery offering below average, boring lagers. You have to be from the french-speaking side of the country and particularly proud of it to like this brewery.
Owned partially by Löwengarten (probably now Schützengarten since the take-over from 2006).
The brewery is scheduled to move to Yverdon in 2012 and hope to double its production soon. This is very likely to happen after the potentiel vacuity created by the closure of Cardinal in Fribourg.

Well, well... What should I say without being unpleasant... They gave a little bit more body to their initial beers, replacing some of the incredible sweetness with a bad, rough and aggressive bitterness. This is very surely brewed with extracts and in any cases just at the level of bad homebrew. You don't believe me ? Just ask Kuaska :-)

Second brewery of the country with 20% of the market. Calanda opened in 1780 in Chur, the Haldengut brewery in 1843 in Winterthur. Calanda and Haldengut merged together in 1990 and were bought by Heineken in 1993. In 2002, the brewey in Winterthur was closed but the Haldengut beers are still produced in Chur. In april 2008 Heineken bought Eichhof, formerly 3rd brewery of the country.

An interesting concept: you can rent this mobile brewery for a party. But the quality of their beers fell down after a very short interesting start and the fact of brewing dangerous spice- and herb-based experiments does not help …

"The biggest brewery of the country. Owner of Cardinal, Hürlimann, Valaisanne, Löwenbräu, Warteck and Gurten, brewing 40% of the whole swiss production and controlling about 70% of the drink market. Nevertheless after losing each year parts of the beer market they decided to sell the brewery to Carlsberg (11-2000). Since then, they are trying to brew more ""specialities"" (Frühlingsbier, Weihnachtsbier, 2.4 Max) but without success on the quality side."

A microbrewery offering top-fermented beers in belgian styles. Interesting and creative beers but lacking of character. Worth a try anyway, most notably because I haven't sampled their beers since quite a long time and that I got good echoes recently.
They are also exporting to the USA (Washington).

The biggest independant swiss brewery! Formerly called Lupo. Producing all possible types of lagers and special beers on customers demand. They are brewing for the supermarket Denner. Have a own brand called Römer Edelhell. Owned by Unidrink since 2005 and changed its name in Ramseier Suisse in April 2008. What is really strange about this company, is the fact they do not make any direct advertising on their brews. One could think they are embarassed about the fact they are brewing beers ...

Big local and, once upon a time, above average beers. They are brewing 3 beers (Helles, Märzen and Weizen) + about 10 different styles each year. Innovative and creative, yes. Quality ? Not always. Some beers are offered unmatured. But it is worth a try anyway, even more as they now have a good period.

Their beers (Goldküstenbräu and Oberländerbräu) are contract brewed at Aare-Bier. Their own brewery should opened in April 2012 (initialy scheduled for December 2011) in Uster. They also had a joint venture with Usterbräu. But let's make it clear: the Goldküstenbräu and the Oberländerbräu Hell are the same beers as Aare-Bier Kellerfrisch. And so is Oberländerbräu Amber the same as Aare-Bier Amber. And I don't want to talk about the Uster Export... So why trying to fool the consumer in talking about a beer from the region? And what will they brew when their own brewery will open ? A copy of the Aare Bier beers or do they hope the customers will not notice a change of recipe ?

"Client brewer (had register-number 311).
Two homebrewers got the wonderful idea to commercialize beers brewed in Germany (Engelbräu (Rettenberg/Allgäu)) in the region of Zürich and it seems that they are enjoying an impressive start. Clever and fine. But as they are using the ""drink local"" trend for boosting their sales, they will try to be consequent and build their own brewery in Zürich. This should be done by the end of 2010.
April 2010: the beers are now brewed in Switzerland by Falken. So it looks like they gave up the idea to build their own plant (I don't think this was ever an option ...). Their beers are available in retail business in the german speaking part of the country which very certainly made them pass over the 10'000 hl range."

This festival, first organised in 2003, brings together more than 20 small to middle swiss breweries. A good opportunity to meet up with the brewers although the conditions for beer tasting and talking are far to be optimum (lot of people (99% of them, don't have the slightest idea about beer), smoke and noise). Anyway this is a pretty interesting festival which every swiss beer lover must attend.

2003 - 2007homepage
2 8.6 Not a brewery but a Client brewer. The beers are brewed elsewhere in the country (Turbinenbräu) and were at sometimes even brewed in France. This fact was originally maintained secret, probably because of the importance of the marketing aspect to brew local beer. The status of la Belle de Genève was quite unknown in 2004. They had to face some financial problems and closed the Brasserie Artisanale de Genève (which probably never really existed ...). They came back in march 2005 with the ambition to build a brewery in Genève.
It looks again a bit different since 2007 as the phone number and email published on the contact list are no more valid and it seems you have to make your orders via the webmaster ... Very strange.

1701 Fribourg
1788 - 2011homepage
23 7.62 Belongs to the Feldschloesschen-Huerlimann-Holding Group which has been bought by Carlsberg (november 2000). Cardinal was scheduled to be closed in 1997 but Feldschloesschen had to face with serious resistance from the beer-lovers of the french-speaking part of the country. The sales dropped down and Feldschloesschen had to come back on its decision. Also brewing the old Gurten brands. Anyway their beers are not exactly what I would call good and they are making most of their money recently with sweetened fruit beers (the Eve serie) or even lemonade (Angel). So don't count on me to cry the day it will be closed.
And the decision came on August 31st 2010: the plant will be closed on June 2011. The reason is the outsourcing by Carlsberg of 20% of the production from the Feldschlösschen Group. The plant in Fribourg being used at 40%, it seems logical that Feldschlösschen has chosen to regroup the production in Rheinfelden.
Closed in June 2011.
